Artist Statement
Abstract painting is liberating for me. I can let myself go, without holding back, allowing room for growth, taking risks, and letting mistakes lead to invention and creation.
Before I begin a painting, I will ask questions that would spark a composition direction and then make my kind of abstract response. My paintings are combined mediums on canvas. Natural materials (silk shantung,...) and found objects (teabag,...) are often incorporated with acrylic paint to create subtle layers to serve the need of each work. Somewhat transparent layers reveal only intended areas are my way of narrating the story, feeling, and concept of my paintings. My paintings are composed of asymmetrical layout, counterpoint, direct intention and simplicity.
As the painting progresses through my mind and body, my thoughts, experiences, and feelings are translated into colors and forms, and through these new forms to make connections with one another. Every time I read the Haiku by the Japanese legendary poet Matsuo Basho, I instantly feel connected to his brevity and simplicity. His three short phrases using vivid images of natural world capture the distinct moments in time. It isn’t just about making poem or art, it is about slowing down to pay attention to the world around us. Art has the power to influence our feeling, transform our experiences and soulfully connect us right into the heart of moment.
My ultimate goal is to create paintings with sensibility and beauty. Viewers are invited to walk free into a poem and experience art.
